Robert Schumann: Concert D: Violin: Score and Parts

‘You were often on my mind when I was writing’ wrote Robert Schumann ...
(+)
‘You were often on my mind when I was writing’ wrote Robert Schumann to Joseph Joachim who had encouraged him to write this concerto. In view of Schumann’s illness however Joachim began to have his doubts about the value of the work. In his will Joachim prohibited the rst performance until the 100th anniversary of Schumann’s death in 1956. After detailed editorial work the premiere was brought forward to 1937.The theme of the middle movement probably formed the basis of Schumann’s Geistervariationen (‘Ghost Variations’) the character of the third movement is that of a grand polonaise. Yehudi Menuhin who performed the world premiere of the unedited version ofSchumann’s solo part saw in this piece ‘the bridge between Beethoven’s and Brahms’ concertos’.

Original Version. Schumann?s Cello Concerto Rediscovered In her first Urtext edition for Edition Peters, internationally renowned cellist Josephine Knight reveals Robert Schumann?s original version of his Cello Concerto in A minor Op. 129 ? a piece he actually called a ?Concertstück? ? removing generations of inauthentic editorial interventions. This is the only available modern scholarly edition of the work as Schumann originally conceived it, and restores the text from October 1850, based on the composer?s manuscript held in the Biblioteka Jagiello?ska in Kraków. This Full Score matches the separately available edition for Cello and Piano (EP 73488). Matching orchestral material is also available from the publisher. Only modern Urtext edition based on Schumann?s original 1850 manuscript Many new corrections and clarifications, especially to the cello part Scholarly preface detailing history of the work and this edition by editor Josephine Knight, Piatti Professor of Cello at the Royal Academy of Music London Cello Part contains Josephine Knight's fingering and bowing suggestions Critical Commentary Cello and piano edition available separately from Edition Peters: orchestral parts available for rental Recording of the Concertstück featuring Josephine Knight available from Dutton Robert Schumann?s tragic last years have mired many of his greatest works in unnecessary doubt. The story of the suppression of his Violin Concerto by well-meaning friends is relatively well-known. Few, however, know that the version of the Cello Concerto that is routinely heard today is so far from Schumann?s original conception of the work ? not only in details of phrasing and articulation, but also featuring a different ending with a bold final flourish from the cello. Composed in a burst of inspiration in two weeks in October 1850 shortly after he and Clara had moved to Düsseldorf, Schumann (who in 1850 was still in good health) never heard the piece performed. In an effort to promote a performance of the work, he gave the score to the cellist Robert Emil Bockmühl. Bockmühl made revisions that Schumann resisted, and the hoped-for performance never happened. Schumann?s health failed and he died aged just 46 in 1856. The Concerto, in an already substantially revised form, was premiered in 1860 but it was not given significant recognition until it was championed by Pablo Casals in the 20th century by which time (and since) the text for the work had accreted additions and alterations from generations of soloists. Now Josephine Knight, Piatti Professor of Cello at the Royal Academy of Music, London has returned to the original 1850 manuscript of the work, which is in the Biblioteka Jagiello?ska in Kraków, to reveal Schumann?s original thoughts for the first time in a modern Urtext edition. The edition reflects Schumann?s original conception of the work as a Concertstück and restores Schumann?s musical text, free of posthumous interventions. ?My ultimate wish,? says the editor, ?is to give performers both access to, and confidence that they are playing from, an edition which is a true representation of the piece in its original form, no matter how much more difficult this might be. I found that incorporating the changes enabled the piece to take on a completely different character ? one that is lighter and happier, even ?cheerful?, as Schumann himself described the work.'

(+)
In Vol. 2 of the Violin Sonatas by Robert Schumann the Wiener Urtext Edition presents the F.A.E. sonata jointly composed by Schumann Brahms and Albert Dietrich as well as the edited version with the movements of Brahms and Dietrich being replaced as third Violin sonata of Robert Schumann. The present edition is based on the edition published in 2002 in the New Schumann Complete Edition and thus on the latest musicological findings. In the case of the F.A.E. sonata this is mainly a matter of slight changes in the fields of dynamics and articulation. In the case of Schumann's third Violin sonata the present edition differs moresignificantly from the first edition published in 1956 and the slightly revised new edition of 1988. The order of the middle movements the accuracy of which could not be clearly determined up to now has been changed compared to the earlier editions because of newly found documents. In addition the repetition of the first section of the middle part notated in the first edition before the last 13 bars yet not intended by Schumann has been omitted. The repetition demanded by the composer however of the first eight bars before the beginning of the coda which is missing in hitherto publications has been added. Moreover in contrast to the first edition the new edition contains a variant for bar 100 in the first movement which was not written out in full by Schumann.

Robert Schumann: Great Works For Piano And Orchestra: Piano: Score
Piano and Orchestra
Dover Publications
Clara Wieck’s sincerest wish was that her future husband Robert Schumann ...
(+)
Clara Wieck’s sincerest wish was that her future husband Robert Schumann turn his extraordinary genius toward the larger and more challenging task of composing orchestral music. Confiding in her diary in 1839 just one year before her marriage she explained that “it would be best if he composed for Orchestra: his imagination cannot find sufficient scope in the Piano…” In the years that followed their marriage Robert Schumann continued to devote much of his attention to Piano music but he also found the time to comply with his beloved Clara’s wish by creating a number of musical pieces composed specifically for Piano andOrchestra. Although Schumann’s genius is most in evidence in his masterful solo Piano compositions and superb lieder his lively and provocative imagination manifests itself with equal aplomb in the works composed for Piano and Orchestra. The same compelling romantic and lyrical qualities that captivate lovers of Schumann’s Piano music are evident in these compositions. Three of his finest are presented here in full score including the A Minor Piano Concerto one of the most popular and frequently performed concertos ever written. All demonstrate his remarkably innovative approach to music diverting substantially from the classic models of the day and display his immense creativity as well as his warmth and sensitivity. Included in this collection of Schumann’s compositions for Piano and Orchestra are: Piano Concerto In A minor Op. 54 (published 1846) Concertstück Op.92 (Introduction and Allegro appassionato; published 1852) Introduction and Allegro Op. 134 (published 1855) These three works by one of the greatest masters of romanticism will delight musicians music lovers and students as well as devotees of Schumann. Pianists will be especially pleased to have these appealing Schumann works in one convenient edition available at

Song Cycle-1840 was Schumann?s famous ?year of song? that brought forth over 100 lieder. They included Myrthen op. 25 which he dedicated ?to his dear bride? Clara Wieck-Schumann. Besides famous songs such as ?Widmung? ?Lotosblume? and ?Nussbaum? to texts by German poets the collection also saw Schumann venture further afield whether to the Scottish Highlands with settings of Robert Burns or to Italy for the ?Venetian Songs? of Thomas Moore. Schumann specialist Kazuko Ozawa has examined the first edition of 1840 and all the manuscript sources. Among the dedicatory autograph copies she has also discovered interestingearly versions of individual songs that are here published in an appendix. Our Urtext edition is rounded off with an extensive history of how Myrthen was composed. This volume is a superlative addition to G. Henle Verlag?s series of Robert Schumann?s song cycles.

30 Transcriptions. Par SCHUMANN ROBERT. The edition Schumann for Guitar is an interesting attempt to transfer Robert Schumann's romantic, lyrical music to the guitar. As a consequence, new tonal possibilities present themselves for the guitar repertoire, particularly in view of the fact that Schumann himself never composed an original piece for guitar. This volume naturally contains pieces from the famous piano cycles Album für die Jugend, Kinderszenen and Albumblätter, but also some lieder like Mondnacht or Im wunderschönen Monat Mai. Special highlights of the volume are the original Schumann transcriptions by Francisco Tárrega (1852-1909) which prove that guitarists studied Schumann's music as early as the 19th century. Schumann for Guitar is ideal for concerts and music lessons, but also for private music-making. The pieces are of easy to intermediate technical difficulty so that even amateur guitar players will enjoy the pieces! / Niveau : Facile à Moyen / Recueil / Guitare

Robert Schumann once described his lieder as a ”mirror image of his self”. This applies particularly to his compositions from Heinrich Heine’s “Buch der Lieder”. What began as a lyrical intermezzo then developed into “Dichterliebe” a work with which Schumann identified the ardour of his love for Clara Wieck. This work still presents an enigma to performers; how Schumann interpretes Heine’s irony in his music is often discussed. But one thing is certain: with “Dichterliebe” the composer created what is perhaps the best-loved and one of the most tightly-woven lieder cycles of the Romanticperiod. This new edition presents the work based on the first edition. It takes Schumann’s autograph score into consideration an autograph score where there have recently been discussions as to whether it should be presented as an independent alternative version. The four lieder omitted by Schumann from the printed edition are included in the appendix. High-quality Urtext edition of this well-known song cycle Appendix includes four lieder by Schumann which he did not include in the original cycle Comprehensive foreword and critical commentary (Ger/Eng)

(+)
Although Robert Schumann absolutely loved to play a duet he wrote only few works for Piano duet. Created in 1848 Bilder aus dem Osten Op. 66 was one of the best-known and most frequently played works in the Piano duet literature until the 20th century. But the Polonaises Op. 3 by the 18-year-old composer following the example of Franz Schubert and even exceeding him in harmonic boldness and tonal ingenuity already show the self-taught Schumann on the way to his own style. After volume 1 which contains the easier works composed for music teaching purposes volume 2 now contains the charming yet hardly known Ballszenen Op. 109 inaddition to the two above-mentioned works. The new edition of the Wiener Urtext Edition based on the musical text of the New Schumann Complete Edition (edited by Joachim Draheim and Bernhard Appel) provides for the first time a reliable original text based on the sources especially for the 8 Polonaises which had been inadequately edited up to now. The appendix contains the popular Fantasiestücke Op. 73 (originally for Clarinet and Piano) edited by the composer and future Schumann researcher Friedrich Gustav Jansen. The arrangement published in 1851 had been revised and thus been authorized by Schumann himself.

Newly re-discovered in the run-up to the Schumann year. About three years ago a previously unknown manuscript of an album leaf for Piano by Robert Schumann was found in the Leopold Sophien Library of Ãœberlingen. The little Piano piece entitled 'Ahnung' had been given and dedicated by Klara Schumann to a friend of hers the lithographer and writer Julius Allgeyer. In the Wiener Urtext Edition series this little work is published for the first time in the run-up to the Schumann year - 2010. A print of the rediscovered Schumann autograph is included in the edition. The expressive relatively easy-to-play piece adds to theRomantic Piano repertoire.

(+)
Robert Schumann’s Violoncello Concerto Op. 129 can be regarded as the first great concerto for this instrument’s repertoire. It is thus somewhat surprising that this work had an extremely problematic reception history at the outset. Schumann wrote the score in 1850 during his Düsseldorf years but there was neither a concrete occasion nor a soloist for a world premiere. After its publication more years elapsed before the world premiere. It was only towards the end of the 19th century that Schumann’s Cello Concerto finally made its breakthrough as a repertoire piece. The Urtext edition is based on theoriginal print of the parts and the Piano reduction which had still been supervised by Schumann. In addition the autograph of the score was consulted for purposes of comparison. The internationally renowned soloist Heinrich Schiff took part in the preparation of the edition for Violoncello and Piano. His experiences have been incorporated into his arrangement of the solo part. With his comments Schiff also provides valuable tips on the interpretation of the work.

Robert Schumann’s Faschingsschwank aus Wien Op. 26 is among the composer’s most popular and most studied piano cycles. Originally conceived as a ‘grand romantic sonata’ the work presents pictures of lively carnival revelry. Based on the musical text of the New Schumann Complete Edition this edition thus represents the current state of Schumann research. The notes on interpretation by Tobias Koch took into account the sound characteristics of the pianoforte and different sources from Schumann’s circle.
